Grigory Nikolayevich Bosenko was born in 1947 in the town of Kiliya, Odesa Region. He graduated from the architectural department of the S. Lazo Chisinau Polytechnic Institute.
The artist has created around fifty bookplates. In his work, Bosenko goes beyond the limits of the traditional bookplate, intended to reflect the nature of the library owner’s book collection and his interests. He strives to make the bookplate a self-sufficient work of graphic art.
The bookplates created by the artist are constructed on an associative-psychological principle and are distinguished by their penetration into the inner world of their owners.
Bosenko’s bookplates may be divided into narrative-thematic and typographic ones. In some, the narrative solution is successfully combined with a typographic one, generally an intricate interlacing of the initials of the owners of the bookplates.
The children’s bookplate occupies a special place in the artist’s work. One of his finest works is the bookplate “This Book Belongs to the Boy Pavlik.”
In working on bookplates, Grigory Bosenko is drawn to the technique of engraving on linoleum, plastic, and organic glass. Recently, he has increasingly turned to the technique of etching and successfully employs the textural and relief qualities of paper.
Grigory Bosenko’s works have been exhibited at the All-Union Bookplate Exhibition (1972, Lviv); the International Exhibition “Book-75” (1975, Moscow); the Republican Exhibition of Visual Arts “The Country’s Youth” (1976, Chisinau); the All-Union Exhibition of Visual Arts “The Country’s Youth” (1976, Moscow); the First Republican Bookplate Exhibition (1976–1977, Chisinau); and the International Exhibition-Competition (1978, Lugano, Switzerland).
